We are planning to have a year-long presence in Athens during 2017 to serve in the on-going refugee crisis.

The image that rocked the news. Three-year-old Alan Kurdi

Since the image of the lifeless body of 3-year-old Alan Kurdi washed up on a beach hit headlines in late 2015, Drop Inn has been sending teams out regularly to Athens since, usually every couple of months to hand out food, water and clothes to the refugees living on the streets. There are people travelling from Nigeria and Afghanistan, as well as war-torn Syria – many of them having lost everything, many of them professionals: doctors, business-owners, reduced to the clothes they have on their backs.

What has become clear is the crisis shows little sign of subsiding, so we have decided to make 2017 a year in which we have a constant presence in the city. This is a huge undertaking, but one which we believe is possible, with your help.

You can help us in two ways:

Going

We need volunteers willing to spend time out there. You don’t need any special qualifications, just a wise head and determination.

While out in Athens you will be spending time in places like Victoria Square supplying food, water and clothes to the refugees living on the streets. It’s important as well to help build morale. These are people like you and me, and it is good to encourage them.

Drop Inn will be footing the cost of the aid to the refugees, but we ask that you cover your personal expenses: flight, accommodation, food and transport. Why not get your church or company to get behind you?

Costs

Flights are usually around £100
Weekly costs (food, accommodation, transport) can amount to around £200 for seven days.
We would also ask that your church or organisation raise an extra £200 for the project.
This helps us fund any initiatives beyond food and clothing.

If you’re interested, please get in touch.

Giving

If you are unable to go out, we would ask you to consider giving financially. Every pound matters.

If you are a church or an organisation, why not encourage a member of your congregation or an employee to go, and get behind them financially. You can give to our shops, or you can donate here, online, using the form below.
